Legal yet Illegal Addiction in the Workplace

There are more than a million Americans suffering from pain.  Their physician prescribed them pain medication. The pain continues so they take more medication to control the perceived pain.  When one doctor refuses, they go to their other doctor until one day, their pharmacy catches up with their doctor shopping.

People who are not in safety sensitive positions are often overlooked for taking prescription drugs on the job.  They may be an assistant, accountant, human resources or legal department. They may not be in a position where someone may be injured on a particular day.  But, they can cost the company a lot of money. For instance, an assistant may send a company sensitive email to a customer which leads to a potential client lost.  An accountant to make a financial mistake that can cost the company millions of dollars. More importantly, the employees began to miss days of work.

Does your company have a policy in place for office personnel or is it only for safety-sensitive personnel?  If you don’t have a policy for all employees and controlled substance, you may consider getting one. The cost of hiring employees due to high turnover is worth having a policy in place.
